My Real Experience when Eating in the Pacific Kitchen:

Last year, I gave a few meals a try that I had never even heard of before and, in the past, would have dismissed out of hand.

I chose to sample Loco Moco (White rice topped with a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and brown gravy constitutes the traditional loco moco, though there are several varieties, from street food to more upscale selections) and Spam Musubi (A slice of grilled Spam on top of a block of rice is wrapped in nori, following the Japanese omusubi tradition, and is a common snack and lunch item in Hawaii), two classic Hawaiian dishes presented by Ono Grindz at Asian Food Fest in Washington Park, despite what I had read about them.

I fell in love with both in that fateful May of 2016 and ever since then, I’ve been on a quest to sample them anywhere I can in Cincinnati. I’ve had Loco Moco from Hapa, E+O Kitchen, and now Pacific Kitchen, an Asian eatery in Montgomery serving dim sum and fusion (flavors from the Pacific Rim, including Indonesia, Taiwan, Laos, Myanmar, China, Japan, Korea, Tongo, and the Philippines). In addition to Ono Grindz, I’ve been fortunate to have tried Spam Musubi at Quán Hapa (which is a little harder to find).

Pacific Kitchen is situated on Market Place, a side street better known as Montgomery Road. Although I don’t frequently travel that way, I’d been wanting to check it out for months. When we traveled to Cincinnati to visit March First Brewing and The Queen City Brewery, we made the decision to stay the night. There were several open seats in the sizable restaurant when we came on a Friday night at 9 o’clock.

1. The Food Review and Menu of Pacific Kitchen

We started with the Siu Mei, which were steamed shrimp dumplings similar to the shumai we’d previously enjoyed at a number of other places in the area. The Pacific Pork Belly Sliders, a build-your-own pork belly bun delicacy, was what BK ultimately chose after sifting over the lengthy menu (there were three pages of appetizers and seven pages of entrees). I had known for months what I was having. We ate enormous dinners, just like the menu.

Despite the price of the menu items, we felt that we got a lot of food for our money, so that is something. I enjoyed the environment, the service, and the availability of plenty of parking.
